Vehicle Review

It took Ford a long time to create a pick-up tailored to the needs of European customers but the brand finally managed it with the third generation Ranger model it launched in 2012. With this line-up, the marque at last had a product to properly compete with the tough Japanese triumvirate that rule this market segment this side of the Atlantic, Mitsubishi's L200, Toyota's Hilux and Nissan's Navara. All three are good vehicles but very obviously commercial in feel. This Ranger claims to offer something more, if not a road car with a pick-up deck, then the closest thing to that we've yet seen, with a design versatile enough for export to over 180 countries. Since this vehicle's original launch though, pick-up buyers have become more demanding, especially in terms of the efficiency they expect and the technology they want. This heavily revised Ranger line-up represents Ford's answer to that need.

There aren't many pick-ups developed first and foremost to prioritise driving dynamics, but this is one of them. So what's it like? Well, really, it depends upon your expectations. Does it ride and handle like a Discovery? Well of course it doesn't. A Discovery isn't built to take a 1.3-tonne payload. But does it set handling standards for the pick-up segment? Very definitely yes, more agile, stable, precise and comfortable than any vehicle of its kind we've seen to date. There's decent steering feel for a pick-up too. Double Cab high-power variants now feature Active Noise Control technology for improved refinement. Under the bonnet, the key news lies with the introduction of a new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine to replace the previous 2.2-litre TDCi unit. It comes in a couple of single-turbo guises, with either 130 or 170PS. Plus there's a flagship bi-turbo 213PS unit with 500Nm of torque. That also features on the top Raptor version with its unique rally-stype coil suspension. Of course, if you're a typical Ranger owner, you'll want to be putting his pick-up's all-terrain capability to the test on a pretty regular basis. Which is why the range is now entirely built around 4WD variants. As usual with vehicles of this type, this one runs in 2WD unless you rotate this controller to its '4H' '4x4 High' setting, something that can be done on the move. That'll be fine for slippery tarmac and grassy fields, but for anything more serious than that, you'll want to switch further into the '4L' '4x4 Low range' mode that'll give you a seriously go-anywhere set of off road ratios.

Almost the only global market in which you won't find this Ranger is that of the US. Apparently, it's not big enough. Seems pretty large to us, nearly five and a half metres long and with a bulk quite intimidating enough to frighten away fast lane dawdlers. This revised version gets a smarter look with a revised front bumper design and a re-styled grille, the central horizontal bar now split along its length into two slim sections. Higher-series versions feature premium bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights. The interior now comes with Ebony Black trim, and the painted surfaces have been given a greater shine and depth. Models equipped with 10-speed automatic transmission also feature a more upscale gear-selector knob. Ther plush Ranger Limited variant features black leather seats and introduces an exclusive 17-inch alloy-wheel design. Otherwise, it's as you were. If you go for the four-door Double Cab, there's plenty of space in the back: two six-footers can certainly sit one behind the other with ease. Under the rear seat, you've hidden storage bins to keep tools and valuables away from prying eyes. Or, if the rear bench isn't in use, you can fold down the backrest for packages you may not want to consign to the rear loadbay. And up-front? Well, you climb up high to perch behind the wheel of any pick-up and this Ranger is no exception, with an airy, commanding cab offering great all-round visibility and class-leading front seat headroom. The instrument cluster with its central LED display was apparently inspired by the design of a G-Shock watch, precision workings protected by a robust casing. And plusher models get an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen on the dash, via which owners can use the latest 'SYNC 3' media connectivity system that Ford now offers in this vehicle.

The early part of the 21st century saw a dramatic change in the UK pick-up truck sector. Before this period, the pick-up had remained well below the radar of most motorists, the preserve of farmers and tradespeople in need of a tough working vehicle capable of besting difficult offroad terrain - usually with a dirty great load in the back. Then the introduction of benefit-in-kind company car taxation in 2002 sparked a minor revolution. Under the new system, company cars were transformed from desirable perks to expensive luxuries. Only higher mileage drivers could really justify running one on financial grounds and many opted out of their firm's scheme completely, taking a cash handout instead. In this climate, the pick-up truck lucked into a position of prominence. Its tax status as a commercial vehicle meant that company car divers could run one and bypass the benefit-in-kind tax system while small business people could do the same, reclaiming the VAT on the purchase price as well. This loophole sparked the pick-up truck's UK market heyday and the Ford Ranger was at its forefront. This Ford Ranger is not to be confused with the North American model of the same name. Where as the US truck was developed by Ford themselves, the 'International' Ranger sold through official channels in the UK was developed by Mazda and built in Thailand. The model we're concerned with here is actually the seventh generation of Mazda's B-Series pick-up rebadged with the blue oval insignia. In the form that arrived in showrooms during May 1999, the Ranger was very much a rough and ready commercial vehicle but when the tax loophole emerged in 2002, Ford rushed to capitalise on the burgeoning pick-up market. The XLT high specification derivative had been available from 2000 and there was the unmistakable XLT WRR (World Rally Ranger) with its over-the-top Martini sponsorship livery from the Focus WRC car. It was the 2003 facelift however, that really placed increased emphasis on comfort and refinement. The post 2003 facelift models feature a more prominent chrome grille, revised bumpers and improved interiors while the XLT derivatives really boosted the equipment quota. The Ranger remained some way off the pace set by Mitsubishi's L200 and Nissan's Pick-Up but it was competitive. The Thunder special edition models offered leather trim and chrome detailing to spruce up the exterior. 2006 saw another facelift and a new common-rail diesel engine that represented a massive improvement over the old lump. Tweaks to the suspension enhanced the on-road driving experience making the Ranger vastly better on the tarmac. The interior also came on leaps and bounds with a much higher quality feel and the plush Thunder models became part of the mainstream range.

Throughout its various facelifts, the Ranger never really ranked amongst the class leaders in the pick-up sector. Each bout of improvements that Ford visited on the car came that fraction too late, the game having already moved on with products from Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi acting as pace setters. That said, the Ranger still sold strongly, its success built on the back of goodwill amongst commercial vehicle buyers reflected from the ever popular Transit van models as well as on Ford's large network of specialist van centres. The range, from the off, was comprised of single, Super and Crew cab offerings. The two-door single cabs have just two seats and a loadbay, the Crew cab is a conventional four-door double cab with two full rows of seats and the Super cab sits someway between the two. From 1999, the Super cab Rangers offered a pair of folding cinema-style seats behind the driver and front passenger so that the space could be used for secure storage when they were empty but in the 2003 facelift, the bodystyle was redesigned. These models retain the fold-up seats but have a pilarless cab design with reverse hinged doors for improved access. The Ranger can certainly pull its weight with payloads in all basic models up over the 1,100kg barrier and every single Ranger capable of coping with 1,000kg. As with all pick-ups, the offroad suspension makes for a high loading height so getting weighty items on board can be a struggle but the tailgate drops down flat so that they can be slid inside. Although the early cars feel utilitarian inside, the 2006 Ranger's interior reflects the demand at the time for pick-up trucks as business vehicles that can also double as family transport on weekends. Angular styling themes are carried over from the exterior with chrome detailing very much in evidence on the higher-spec derivatives. Much thought was given to the provision of storage space: there are no fewer than five cup holders, a pull-out tray in the instrument panel and two deep storage bins in the centre console to keep your odds and ends in check. The popular Thunder high-spec derivatives appeal to buyers who really want to push the 'lifestyle' boat out. These feature a tubular sports bar to beef-up the front end, chrome side sills, leather seats, a six CD stereo and air-conditioning, amongst other things. All Ranger models get twin front airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners with further safety equipment available from the options list.

Ford's improved Ranger really has gone large in its appeal as a competitive proposition against tough rivals in the pick-up segment. The idea is to tempt everyone from builders to surf-boarding, mountain-biking families with what is now a very complete product indeed. There are three Ranger bodystyles - 'Regular' single cab, 'Super' (which has occasional rear seats) and 'Double Cab' with proper rear seats. There are five trim levels - XL, XLT, Limited, Wildtrack and Raptor. As for practicality, well the 'Regular Cab' and 'Super Cab' models offer the largest load area box in the class with, respectively, 1.82 and 1.45 cubic metres, while the Double Cab version is also more than competitive with 1.21 cubic metres. Running costs, meanwhile, are much improved - by over 17% with the four cylinder version, which now returns 43.5mpg on the combined cycle and 171g/km of CO2. Under the bonnet, the key news lies with the introduction of a new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine to replace the previous 2.2-litre TDCi unit. It comes in a couple of single-turbo guises, with either 130 or 170PS. Plus there's a flagship bi-turbo 213PS unit with 500Nm of torque. When it all comes down to it, the right tool can make child's play of men's work.
